16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you. ”
Genesis 3:16 NIV
According to our text, the woman will desire most of all her husband. He will be the main focus and purpose of her life besides God. The next verse goes on to say that the man will also rule over her. Of course this is regarding subjection of authority, but not ownership as many societies have believed. Our text sums it up in a short explanation by saying,” the wife would have a deep natural attraction to her husband” (p.94 Davis). Of course this explains why women are usually more willing to put everything on the line to save a relationship, while men can be totally oblivious to the fact. They almost seem to not even care according to a woman’s point of view. This is not a universal situation, but very common in my understanding of the social norms of our country. I believe just as our text touches on, that this “desire” has helped to fuel the love in marriages. Without the woman’s strong passion for her husband, a marriage relationship would be near impossible. This love makes it even more difficult for the devil to break.
I agree with our text that the woman’s curse will be to seek a man. In America little girls grow up dreaming of their wedding day. My wife dressed her little sister up along with her brother just for an opportunity to live out this fantasy early through a game. What they are actually doing is not just a game, but a desire to act according to what was placed inside of them. God gave women a genuine attraction to their male counter parts. They will almost go to any extent to see a man pursue them. Our society is filled with attention hungry ladies who will do anything, including sacrifice their dignity and purity on national television. This desire, just like many others must be controlled. It usually starts with the father in the girl’s life. If he does a good job as a parent along with the mother by providing that love and attention, in my opinion this stops a good portion of the promiscuous activity. Many times it seems that a wife is not happy unless the husband is completely happy and satisfied. This is because the wife lives for her husband. Much can be learned from the ladies men. Maybe we should pay attention in this love category about passion.
